I've only once asked a retailer to refund the difference of an item that went on sale shortly after I bought it. As it was part of their policy and in the fine print on the receipt, I had no problem asking and the clerk gave me no problems. As I generally only shop sale or thrift these days, it hasn't happened recently.

Yes, it's definitely illegal if they mark down a false price but if the items are in bargain bins (eg all items $15 etc) and you just imply they're reduced, then it's a bit more of a grey area. I guess the trick is to judge the item on its own worth, not the label (be it designer or sale) attached, sometimes very hard... I once went crazy in a Kookai outlet store, granted I didn't spend a fortune because it was all so cheap, but it was annoying having all these tiny bright shiny tops that I never wear cluttering up my too small wardrobe space for ages after. I've been a lot more restrained whenever I see a sale/reduced etc sign since learning that lesson! :-)

<b>Kitty</b>: Thanks for the layby tip Cathy! But re the extra stuff brought in for the sale, if they're doing it here, it's completely illegal -- or at least, it is if it has an "original" higher price on the tag. If it does, it's called 'double pricing' and you should dob them in to the Department of Fair Trading.

<b>Sarah</b>: Totally agree -- I spend hours shopping clearances too. It's the only way to find the best stuff!

Sales are the best! I've been to lots of clearance sales and believe it or not I almost always find items that look like I bought them at regular price. And the good thing is, I only only paid half or less its original price! It's just a matter of being patient in sorting throught the stocks on clearance. Beneath that stained top might be a flawless one. That is why it always takes me long hours to get my shopping done during sales ;)

I've had stuff on layby discounted when I've gone to pick it up and there's been a sale. Stores have different policies on this (I had this happen without asking for the discount at some cheapie store and also at Bally which turned a couple of pair of shoes into a mild indulgence instead of evidence of madness). So if you really can't risk to lose that one in a million piece but you know a sale is just round the corner, try a layby and test your luck and/or bargaining skills!

One thing though to look out for in sales is stuff that was never put out retail, ie they are of much lesser quality that normal. There were some stories a few years ago in the US press of big name designers who were creating 2nd rate items especially for the sales and I have to say that sometimes I've seen stuff that seems to have been put on display only when the sale started.
